A family nurse practitioner (FNP) is a registered nurse who has completed graduate-level education and holds a separate New York State certificate as a nurse practitioner. Both the underlying RN license and the NP certificate are issued and tracked by the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions, which also runs the public registry where any New York nurse practitioner's license can be verified by name.
Under New York's Nurse Practitioner Modernization Act, a nurse practitioner with more than 3,600 hours of practice experience may diagnose, order and interpret tests, and prescribe medication — including controlled substances — without a written collaborative agreement with another licensed provider. Family nurse practitioners are trained and certified across the lifespan, not limited to a single organ system.
