Kybella is deoxycholic acid injected into the fat under the chin, where it breaks down the membranes of the cells it reaches. The FDA approved it for moderate to severe fullness from submental fat in adults — not for fat elsewhere. The label allows up to six sessions at least a month apart. What is Kybella?
Kybella (deoxycholic acid, NDA 206333) is a prescription drug. Small injections, 1 cm apart, go into the fat under the chin; the label calls it cytolytic — it destroys the membranes of cells it is injected into. It is not a filler, and the label says its use outside the area under the chin is not established and not recommended.
In two placebo-controlled trials (1,022 adults), 70.0% and 66.5% of treated people improved by at least one grade on both the clinician's and their own rating 12 weeks after the last session, against 18.6% and 22.2% on placebo. A two-grade improvement was reached by 13.4% and 18.6%. 59% of treated people had all six sessions.
The label asks the provider to rule out other causes of fullness, such as an enlarged thyroid or lymph nodes, and to think carefully when skin is very loose or neck bands are prominent. That is part of the consultation here.
